Gen Z, Politics, and Social Media in America
August 8, 2024 – Mintz, 919 3rd Ave, NYC & Online
Produced with the generous support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies and Mintz, this hybrid event featured Kurt Andersen (author of Fantasyland and Evil Geniuses) in conversation with Kanika Mehra, a rising Gen Z journalist and political commentator. Together, they explored how young Americans can navigate the intersection of politics and social media to spark systemic change. Andersen examined how falsehoods and inequality have shaped the current landscape, while Mehra highlighted Gen Z’s demand for authenticity, accountability, and real reform in political discourse.

Governance & Leadership
- Established the Gen Z Board, expanding youth representation at the highest level of SMC governance.
- Launched a Trustee–Gen Z mentorship program, pairing established leaders with emerging advocates for reciprocal learning.
- Formed the Public Statements Committee, creating a structured process for how SMC engages in public advocacy and signs onto collective actions.

- Safe Social Media Working Group: Convened as a coalition to explore a certification “badge” for platforms and brands meeting youth-driven safety and accountability standards.

- Elevated Emma Lembke as a leading national voice on Gen Z digital reform through speaking engagements, media interviews, and Substack Live conversations.
- Issued public letters and statements addressing disinformation, political violence, and social media harms, which received strong coverage and attention.

- Engaged with major philanthropic networks at CGI, Nexus Global, and UNGA to align funding with youth-driven digital reform.
- Strengthened collaborations with intergenerational allies, academics, and nonprofit leaders to expand SMC’s reach and resources.
